Patients First
We’re transforming health care in North Carolina. As the top producer of health care professionals in our state, ECU Health Sciences is finding new ways to keep North Carolinians healthy. From the mountains to the coast, ECU health sciences graduates are improving lives. With our location in a rural, underserved region, we pride ourselves on putting patients first – including those who wouldn’t have access to care if not for us.
Health Sciences Student Center
The state-of-the-art 75,000-square-foot Health Sciences Student Center is the first standalone student center on a medical campus in North Carolina as well as one of the few in the United States. This multi-purpose facility houses various student services, activities and a full-service 25,000 square foot recreation and wellness center. The center also offers dining options including Starbucks, Greens to Go and Local Eats – serving the students, faculty, staff and guests of the Health Sciences Campus

Interprofessional Education
Interprofessional education and practice is intended to help students and health care personnel learn about one another and provide the highest quality of care by promoting knowledge of and maximizing the skill sets of members of other professions within the health services of a community. In a world of ever-more complex health issues and health personnel shortages, collaboration between the health professions is considered a necessity.
Positioned to Improve Rural Health
Through a shared mission to improve the health status and well-being for the citizens of rural North Carolina, the colleges and schools on ECU’s health sciences campus are poised to transform access to essential care in rural and underserved areas of our state. Through innovation, collaboration, and interdisciplinary partnerships, the Division of Health Sciences improves the way health care is provided, as well as conducts research that advances care.
ECU Health
ECU Health and East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine have aligned to become a clinically integrated, academic health care organization. This integration will allow the two organizations to provide efficient, effective and high-quality care to eastern North Carolina residents, become the national model for academic rural health care and develop a shared brand.
Research Overview
Our researchers are studying the health conditions – and health challenges – most prevalent throughout the region. The expertise we’ve built through laboratory and clinical research is the foundation for improving the health status of eastern North Carolina’s residents. It’s preventing obesity in children and helping senior citizens live healthier, more productive lives. It’s making our veterans more resilient, giving hope to individuals living with chronic physical – or mental – pain, and removing barriers to care for the region’s rural and underserved populations.
Our work makes a global impact as well. Our scientists are recognized as world leaders in the study of metabolic diseases like diabetes and hypertension. They are advancing the research agenda for treatments to address life-changing injuries and diseases such as spinal cord damage and osteoarthritis.
We also drive innovation in the way we prepare our future health care workforce. We are one of only 11 medical schools in the nation to receive a $1 million grant from the American Medical Association to help shape medical education around team-based, patient-centered care. A $2.5 million U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant is allowing us to implement an interdisciplinary educational model to better treat elderly patients.
